Pineapple is Good For You

The pineapple is a member of the brome liad family. It is extremely rare that bromeliads produce edible fruit. The pineapple is the only available edible bromeliad today. It is a multiple fruit. One pineapple is actually made up of dozens of individual flowerettes that grow together to form the entire fruit. Each scale on a pineapple is evidence of a separate flower.

Pineapples stop ripening the minute they are picked. No special way of storing them will help ripen them further. Color is relatively unimportant in determining ripeness. Choose your pineapple by smell. If it smells fresh, tropical and sweet, it will be a good fruit. The more scales on the pineapple, the sweeter and juicier the taste. After you cut off the top, you can plant it. It should grow much like a sweet potato will.

This delicious fruit is not only sweet and tropical, it also offers many benefits to our health. Pineapple is a remarkable fruit. We find it enjoyable because of its lush, sweet and exotic flavor, but it may also be one of the most healthful foods available today. If we take a more detailed look at it, we will find that pineapple is valuable for easing indigestion, arthritis or sinusitis. The juice has an anthelmintic effect; it helps get rid of intestinal worms.

Let’s look at how pineapple affects other conditions. Pineapple is high in manganese, a mineral that is critical to development of strong bones and connective tissue. A cup of fresh pineapple will give you nearly 75% of the recommended daily amount. It is particularly helpful to older adults, whose bones tend to become brittle with age.

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme, is the key to pineapple’s value.

It helps the body digest proteins more efficiently. Proteolytic means “breaks down protein”, which is why pineapple is known to be a digestive aid. Bromelain is also considered an effective anti-inflammatory. Regular ingestion of at least one half cup of fresh pineapple daily is purported to relieve painful joints common to osteoarthritis. It produces mild pain relief. In Germany, bromelain is approved as a post-injury medication because it is thought to reduce inflammation and swelling.

Orange juice is a popular liquid for those suffering from a cold because it is high in Vitamin C. Fresh pineapple is not only high in this vitamin, but because of the bromelain, it has the ability to reduce mucous in the throat. If you have a cold with a productive cough, add pineapple to your diet. It is commonly used in Europe as a post-operative measure to cut mucous after certain sinus andthroat operations. Those individuals who eat fresh pineapple daily report fewer sinus problems related to allergies. In and of itself, pineapple has a very low risk for allergies.

Pineapple is also known to discourage blood clot development. This makes it a valuable dietary addition for frequent fliers and others who may be at risk for blood clots. An old folk remedy for morning sickness is fresh pineapple juice. It really works! Fresh juice and some nuts first thing in the morning often makes a difference. It’s also good for a healthier mouth. The fresh juice discourages plaque growth.

The Hawaiian Lei

The History of the Hawaiian Lei

The lei custom was introduced to the Hawaiian Islands by early Polynesian voyagers, who took an incredible journey from Tahiti, navigating by the stars in sailing canoes. With these early settlers, the lei tradition in Hawaii was born.

Leis were constructed of flowers, leaves, shells, seeds, nuts, feathers, and even bone and teeth of various animals. In Hawaiian tradition, these garlands were worn by ancient Hawaiians to beautify themselves and distinguish themselves from others. The Maile lei was perhaps the most significant. Among other sacred uses, it was used to signify a peace agreement between opposing chiefs. In a Heiau (temple), the chiefs would symbolically intertwine the green Maile vine, and its completion officially established peace between the two groups.

maile lei

A Custom of Aloha

With the advent of tourism in the islands, the lei quickly became the symbol of Hawaii to millions of visitors worldwide.

During the “Boat Days” of the early 1900s, lei vendors lined the pier at Aloha Tower to welcome malihini (visitors) to the islands and kama’aina (locals) back home. It is said that departing visitors would throw their lei into the sea as the ship passed Diamond Head, in the hopes that, like the lei, they too would return to the islands again someday.

Today, visitors can easily bring back the nostalgia of old Hawaii by ordering a traditional flower lei greeting for their arrival at the airport. Greeters welcome visitors with a warm aloha and adorn them with beautiful fresh leis. It’s a wonderful way to begin a Hawaiian vacation.

Lei Etiquette

There are very few “rules” when it comes to wearing a Hawaiian lei. Anyone can wear one, anytime – there need not be an occasion. It is perfectly fine for one to purchase or make a lei for themselves. It is common for locals to have a nut, seed or shell lei on hand to wear on special occasions. And hats are often adorned with flower, fern or feather leis.

There are, however, a couple of “unspoken rules” one should know when receiving a lei for the first time. A lei should be a welcomed celebration of one person’s affection to another. Therefore, always accept a lei, never refuse. The proper way to wear a lei is gently draped over the shoulders, hanging down both in front and in back. It is considered rude to remove a lei from your neck in the presence of the person who gave it to you, so if you must, be discreet.

Lei giving is a regular part of any special occasion such as birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, and graduations. It is not uncommon for a graduating senior to have so many leis around their neck that they can no longer see!

Lei or Leis?

The Hawaiian language does not distinguish between singular and plural. Therefore, the proper way to say the plural form of lei is actually just Â?lei. However, on our website we have chosen to use the anglicized version of this word to prevent confusion.

Ma’alaea Banyans #219

Pure luxury and comfort within this condo. The owner’s attention to detail conveyed genuine care for guests. It was immaculate. I felt the “Aloha” every time I walked through the door during my one week stay. It is truly an oceanfront gem. A place to savor time, however you choose to spend it. Ma’alaea is my favorite location to stay on the island. It is centrally located, peacefully beautiful and, “coming home” after exploring in any direction is just right. Additionally, I enjoy the expanse of beach — a brief walk to feet in the sand. Staying here is a unique and exceptional experience. I hope to return and cannot recommend highly enough. Many “extras” are very thoughtfully provided. Mahalo.

Island Sands #605

This was our second stay at the Island Sands and we absolutely love it! The location is perfect; it is centrally located to everything on Maui (airport, Kahului for shopping, Lahaina, the great beaches along Kihei, Wailea, and Makena, walking distance to the Maui Ocean Center and shops.) It is also nicely located on a dead end street, without a lot of traffic and the associated noise. A short walk to the end of this street is a public park with access to a great sandy beach, where you can walk for 2-1/2 miles before encountering another building. Go for a walk in the early morning (which is easy, early in your stay as your body is adjusting to the time change from the U.S. mainland) and you will have this beach to yourself.

Nikta’s unit #605 is very nicely appointed and decorated beautifully in a very appropriate island motif with bamboo floors throughout. It was nice to rent from someone who lives on Maui, and who we had had the pleasure of meeting at the weekly pupu party held at the pool on Saturday evenings. She is very accommodating, and eager to help you make the most of your time on Maui if you are seeking suggestions. Overall, all of the residents we met from the Island Sands are very friendly and nice to chat with around the pool or barbecue grills. We look forward to our next visit to paradise, and would highly recommend Island Sands #605 from Unikta Vacations to anyone!

Celebrate the Spring Equinox on March 21

The spring equinox is one of the four great solar festivals of the year. Day and night are equal, poised and balanced, but about to tip over on the side of light.

The spring equinox is sacred to dawn, youth, the morning star and the east. The Saxon goddess, Eostre (from whose name we get the direction East and the holiday Easter) is a dawn goddess, like Aurora and Eos.

Just as the dawn is the time of new light, so the vernal equinox is the time of new life.

Guidelines for our self-development listed below are not exhaustive but will provide plenty of grist for the mill that slowly grinds down our egocentric tendencies.

Practice makes perfect!

• Express compassion in your actions towards those who are suffering physically or emotionally

• Anything that comes to you should be received as a gift from Providence

• Do not hoard things that are not required

• Give away things to those who are in need Keep busy in selfless service

• Reduce your needs to a minimum

• Avoid discussions or reading books that are contrary to your self-development

• Do not indulge in any action that may cause harm to others in any form, directly or indirectly

• Look for good qualities in others rather than looking for their shortcomings

• Do not get involved in unnecessary talks

• Do not expect praise for your good actions

• Anger, hate and jealousy appear in the mind by comparing with

others; they should be replaced by love towards others.

• Be humble and give respect to others

• Pray to God for forgiveness of any undesired actions, done knowingly or unknowingly

• Perform your duties towards your family, society and country with pure and selfless intent

Ma’alaea Banyans #219

This vacation was a first as “Empty Nester’s” for my husband and myself. Nikta wasn’t using the term “luxury” for nothing. It’s simply impossible to reflect how stunning this condo is from photo’s alone! The layout is perfect for a romantic get-away and thoughtfully planned out with every conceivable amenity. The balcony looks out over a mesmerizing water view complete with frolicking whales. I think whale watching from the balcony was easily as fantastic as the whale watching we paid for from a boat.. We really loved the designer touches and upscale appliances. No detail was left out. A well stocked kitchen, more than enough soft luxury bath towels, beach towels and beach equipment. The location was close to everything but just far enough away from big crowds of tourists. Quiet at night with ample parking right next to the building. Beautiful spot to reconnect with your loved one. Can’t thank you enough for the memories of our perfect Hawaiian vacation.

We had an amazing time in Maui and we were all very depressed when we had to return! Thank you so much for all that you did for us in making this trip one of a lifetime that we will never forget. Our accommodations were excellent, no complaints there. And the excursions that you helped us with were excellent as well. We had a great time at the luau and our seats were great! And the snorkel trip that we did with the Pacific Whale Foundation was the highlight for me and my youngest daughter as we saw several whales, sea turtles, dolphins, and lots of fish! The service and attention that you paid to us was top notch. I will definitely be passing along to any friends, family, and acquaintances your information. We would love to one day return and if we are able to do so I will definitely touch base with you directly in hopes of being able to stay in one of your units! Thanks again for all that you did for us. I have no constructive advice or criticisms as everything was great, keep up the great work! -D.R. and Family

“Something amazing happens when we surrender and just love. We melt into another world, a realm of power already within us. The world changes when we change. The world softens when we soften. The world loves us when we choose to love the world.”

Unikta Vacation Guest Notes

Ma’alaea Banyans #219

Thank you so much for the use of your condo. It was perfect for us. It is so well equipped, beautifully appointed, centrally located & very comfortable. We loved our visit to Maui & it is definitely on our list of “places to go back to” We fell in love with Makena Beach. We throughly enjoyed “Mama’s Fish House”. We haven’t make it to Mala yet but plan to go before we fly out on Tuesday.

Thank you again for everything (Welcome gifts, dining options, swap meet info, etc.) Your thoughtfulness & attention to detail did not go unnoticed.

Take care,

Island Sands #605

“Island Sands #605 feels like home and Nikta is ‘da best’!”

Reviewed January 18, 2012

We absolutely love Nikta’s beautiful 2BD/2BA unit at Island Sands and we cannot wait to go back. There is access to a great little beach right behind the building and most days we were the only ones on it. We fished right off the beach and caught enough papio and lai for two nights dinners, which we BBQd down stairs by the pool. The view is terrific from the lanai and we could watch the sunset from the bed in the master bedroom. There is a washer/dryer and full kitchen. Just stop at the grocery on the way in and you are set! We cooked many of our own meals (which saved lots of money) and with the washer/dryer, you hardly have to bring any clothes at all. Nikta has setup the unit beautifully and it is spotless when you arrive.

You can see lots of pictures at her website: http://www.uniktavacations.com/condo2.html

In the evening just open up the back bedroom windows and the lanai screen door and a breeze blows right through. Terrific! We would recommend Island Sands #605 whole-heartedly. It feels like home the minute you walk in and working with Nikta is effortless. She also has a 1BD/1BA unit in the building next door, Ma’alaea Banyans #219. We’ve stayed there twice. It’s perfect for a couple and the view toward SE Maui and Molokini is incredible.

We love Nikta and Ma’alaea! Island Sands and Ma’alaea Banyans are located near Ma’alaea Harbor, away from the busy tourist areas yet accessible to everything. Kihei is just a few miles away (that’s where we went for groceries), Lahaina and Ka’anipali are to the west, and we took highway 30 several times over to Wailuku and Happy Valley. We like Ma’alaea because it feels like you’re in the center of everything but away from the crowds. We watched the dive boats leaving for Molokini right from Ma’alaea Harbor and we walked to the Maui Aquarium. BONUS: right at the end of Hauoli Street is a beautiful sandy beach. I couldn’t find it in the guide books either, so it is almost private.

Sometimes Ma’alaea can get windy, but because of the way the buildings are situated they act as big windblocks and we were never bothered by it. We sat out on the lanai everyday. This was our most relaxing vacation ever!

Mahalo Nikta! Hope we get to stay with you again soon!

Honua Kai #622

“Home Away from Home”

We (parents with a 7 month old and grandparents) spent a week at HonuaKai and thought it was an amazing resort. The resort is top notch. The grounds are well maintained and the pool areas are gorgeous. The beach in front of the resort is beautiful with good snorkeling reef. We saw turtles and all kinds of fish. Our condo (HK #622)was very comfortable and very clean. It was well stocked with kitchen supplies, towels, beach accessories and pretty much anything you would have at home.

Nikta, the property manager, was a dream to deal with. She was very accomodating and made our stay very comfortable. Location of resort was great. Very close to Kaanapali, grocery stores and restaurants. We will stay at this resort and this condo again with our family!

A rare, endangered Hawaiian monk seal paid the Banyans a visit on January 13th. A female, she stayed for a while to snooze and sunbathe on the beach right in front of the condo building. There are only an estimated 1100 Hawaiian monk seals left in the world. They are endemic to Hawaii.

When seals haul out on the beach to rest, a call to NOAA Fisheries service is warranted and a representative will soon arrive to stake out a safety zone and keep onlookers away from the area. The number to report monk seal sightings or monk seals in trouble is: 808-292-2372.

The Best Beaches to Visit on Maui

D.T. Fleming Beach Park, Maui

D.T. Fleming Beach Park: This quiet, out-of-the-way beach, located north of the Ritz-Carlton hotel, starts at the 16th hole of the Kapalua Golf Course (Makaluapuna Point) and rolls around to the sea cliffs on the other side of the cove. Ironwood trees provide shade on the land side. Offshore, a shallow sandbar extends out to the edge of the surf. The waters are generally good for swimming and snorkeling, but sometimes, near the sea cliffs, the waves are big enough to suit body boarders and surfers.

Kapalua Beach: On an island of many great beaches, this one takes the prize. A golden crescent with swaying palms protected from strong winds and currents by two outstretched lava-rock promontories, Kapalua has calm waters that are perfect for snorkeling, swimming, and kayaking. Even though it borders the Kapalua Resort, the beach is long enough for everyone to enjoy. Facilities include showers, restrooms, and lifeguards.

Kaanapali Beach: Four-mile-long Kaanapali stands out as one of Maui’s best beaches, with grainy gold sand as far as the eye can see. Most of the beach parallels the sea channel, and a paved beach walk links hotels and condos, open-air restaurants, and the Whalers Village shopping center. Summertime swimming is excellent. The best snorkeling is around Black Rock, in front of the Sheraton; the water is clear, calm, and populated with brilliant tropical fish.

Wailea Beach: This is the best gold-sand, crescent-shaped beach on Maui’s sun-baked southwestern coast. One of five beaches within Wailea Resort, Wailea Beach is big, wide, and protected on both sides by black-lava points. It serves as the front yard for the Four Seasons Resort, Maui’s most elegant hotel, and the Grand Wailea Resort, its most outrageous. From the beach, the view out to sea is magnificent, framed by neighboring Kahoolawe and Lanai and the tiny crescent of Molokini. The clear waters tumble to shore in waves just the right size for gentle riding, with or without a board. All the beaches on the west and south coasts are great for spotting whales, but Wailea, with its fairly flat sandy beach that gently slopes down to the ocean, provides

Maluaka Beach (Makena Beach): On the southern end of Maui’s resort coast, development falls off dramatically, leaving a wild, dry countryside punctuated by green kiawe trees. This wide, palm-fringed crescent of golden sand is set between two black-lava points and bounded by big sand dunes topped by a grassy knoll. Makena can be perfect for swimming when it’s flat and placid, but it can also offer excellent bodysurfing when the waves come rolling in. Molokini and Kahoolawe can be seen off in the distance.

Waianapanapa State Park: In east Maui, a few miles before Hana, the 120 acres of this state park offer 12 cabins, a caretaker’s residence, a picnic area, a shoreline hiking trail, and, best of all, a black-sand beach (it’s actually small black pebbles). Swimming is generally unsafe, though, due to strong waves and rip currents. But it’s a great spot for picnicking, hiking along the shore, and simply sitting and relaxing.

Hamoa Beach: This half-moon-shaped, gray-sand beach (a mix of coral and lava) in a truly tropical setting is a favorite among sunbathers, snorkelers, and body surfers in Hana. The 100-foot-wide beach is about 900 feet long and sits below 30-foot, black-lava sea cliffs. An unprotected beach open to the ocean, Hamoa is often swept by powerful rip currents. The surf breaks offshore and rolls in, making this a popular surfing and bodysurfing area. The calm left side is best for snorkeling in the summer.

Harnessing the Power of Intention for the New Year

Intention is the starting point of every dream. It is the creative power that fulfills all of our needs, whether for money, relationships, spiritual awakening, or love. Everything that happens in the universe begins with intention. When you decide to buy a birthday present, wiggle your toes, or call a friend, it all starts with intention.

An intention is a directed impulse of consciousness that contains the seed form of that which you aim to create. Like real seeds, intentions can’t grow if you hold on to them. Only when you release your intentions into the fertile depths of your consciousness can they grow and flourish. In the book The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, by Deepak Chopra, the Law of Intention and Desire describes the five steps for harnessing the power of intention to create anything you desire.

1. Get Clear on your Intentions and Desires

Most of the time our mind is caught up in thoughts, emotions, and memories, and its easy to fall into the grip of our egos fears and demands. It is therefore important to remind yourself day in and day out of your intentions, desires, and spiritual purpose. Many people find it helpful to write down their intentions and review them each day, just before meditation.

2. Slip into the Gap

Once you’ve reviewed your intentions and desires, let them go simply stop thinking about them and begin your regular meditation practice. In meditation you experience your true Self, which is pure awareness, pure potentiality, and pure being. When youre rooted in the experience of pure potentiality, your intentions can spontaneously manifest with effortless ease.

3. Remain Centered in a State of Restful Awareness

Intention is much more powerful when it comes from a place of contentment than if it arises from a sense of lack or need. Stay centered and refuse to be influenced by other peoples doubts or criticisms. Your higher Self knows that everything is all right and will be all right, even without knowing the timing or the details of what will happen.

4. Detach from the Outcome

Relinquish your rigid attachment to a specific result and live in the wisdom of uncertainty. Attachment is based on fear and insecurity, while detachment is based on the unquestioning belief in the power of your true Self. Intend for everything to work out as it should, then let go and allow opportunities and openings to come your way.

5. Let the Universe Handle the Details

Your focused intentions set the infinite organizing power of the universe in motion. Trust that infinite organizing power to orchestrate the complete fulfillment of your desires. Dont listen to the voice that says that you have to be in charge, that obsessive vigilance is the only way to get anything done. The outcome that you try so hard to force may not be as good for you as the one that comes naturally. You have released your intentions into the fertile ground of pure potentiality, and they will bloom when the season is right.

As we begin a new year filled with unlimited possibility, take some time to consider your intentions, your desires, and where you want to focus your attention in the months ahead. Thousands of years ago, the Indian sages observed that our destiny is ultimately shaped by our intentions and desires. The classic Vedic text the Upanishads declares: You are what your deepest desire is. As your desire is, so is your intention. As your intention is, so is your will. As your will is, so is your deed. As your deed is, so is your destiny”

Ma’alaea Banyans #219

Dear Nikta,

This is our very first time vacationing @ #219 Maalaea Banyans on the beautiful Island of Maui, Hawaii for two and a half weeks and it was truly a dream in Paradise. You helped make our stay something that we will never forget! We are elderly and you treated us and cared for us as you would your own parents. And we Thank You so much.

It was heavenly sitting out on the Lanai overlooking the ocean with the lovely palm trees swaying from the Trade winds. And the Luau you arranged for us to attend, was spectacular. Your contacts were so kind to us.

We rented a car and drove over 550 miles exploring the beautiful Maui sights. We also took the bus trip on the road to Hana, where the scenery was spectacular!

Your one bedroom apartment served us beautifully. Your luxurious washer & dryer and other appliances were very convenient to use. When we walked in, you had the most lovely basket of fresh fruit and goodies to greet us, what a most welcome sight!

We certainly will refer your lovely accommodations to our acquaintances. And we Thank You so very much for everything Nikta, our Love and Best Wishes,

Merry Christmas ~ Mele Kalikimaka

(pronounced may-lay ka-lee-key-ma-ka)

The words “Mele Kalikimaka” are a phonetic translation. When the missionaries and other Westerners first brought the custom of Christmas to the islands the Hawaiians had difficulty pronouncing Merry Christmas and turned it into words that rolled more easily off their tongues.

Happy New Year ~ Haua’oli Makahiki Hou

(pronounced how-oh-lay ma-ka-hee-key ho)

The western Christmas and New Year fell during this same time of the year that the Hawaiians traditionally honored the earth for giving them plenty to eat. This period of resting and feasting was called Makahiki (mah-kah-HEE- kee). It lasted for 4 months, and no wars or conflicts were allowed during this time. Because makahiki also means “year”, the Hawaiian phrase for “Happy New Year” became “Hau’oli (happy) Makahiki (year) Hou (new)”(how-OH-lee mah-kah-hee-kee ho).

Winter Festivals and Celebrations

Here we have gathered a list of some of the most cherished winter festivals, as well as a brief description of each, for you and your family to enjoy.

Advent: Means “coming”. The season of Advent begins on the closest Sunday to November 30th, and is a period of making ready for the coming of the divine light of Christmas or the return of the light of the Winter Solstice.

St. Nicholas Day: One of the most important holidays in many European countries, St. Nicholas Day opens the gift giving season in many parts of the world. For most, St. Nicholas Day begins on December 6th, and it is believed that Santa Claus has his origins in the life and celebration of St. Nicholas.

St. Lucia: December 13th follows the longest night of the year in Sweden, and this is the day that the festival of St. Lucia is celebrated. In this celebration, the eldest daughter is dressed in a white gown and a crown of seven candles placed upon her head.

Winter Solstice: The shortest day of the year, and the day that marks the return of the light that began to fade with the Summer Solstice. From this day forward, until the Summer Solstice, each day will become progressively longer. The Winter Solstice also marks the time in each of our lives where we celebrate the period of intense inner reflection that the darkening days can bring, and a return to the outward nature of our communities and lives with the return of longer days and warmer weather.

Las Posadas: Is a nine-day celebration that began in Spain, and that is now celebrated mainly in Mexico. Las Posadas begins on December 16th and ends December 24th. It is a yearly tradition that celebrates the trials that Mary and Joseph went through before finding a place for Jesus to be born.

Hanukkah: The Festival of Lights in the Jewish faith. This holiday lasts eight days, and commemorates the re-dedication of the holy Temple in Jerusalem following the Jewish victory over the Syrian-Greeks in 165 B.C.E.

Christmas: Held on December 25th, this is the celebration of the birth of Christ in the Christian faith.

Kwanzaa: Is a week long celebration held in the United States honoring universal African Heritage and culture. This holiday is marked by participants lighting a Kinara (candle holder), and is observed from December 26 to January 1 every year.

New Years Eve: In western culture, it is a celebration of the final day of the Gregorian Year, and the beginning of a new year on the Gregorian Calendar. Other religions and cultures celebrate the coming of the New Year at different times and in different ways.

Twelfth Night: Is a festival that is celebrated in some branches of Christianity that marks the coming of the Epiphany and the conclusion of the Twelve Days of Christmas.

Epiphany: Also known as Three Kings Day and Twelfth Day, is celebrated on January 6th and is the end of the Twelve Days of Christmas. The feast celebrates the manifestation of God taking human form through Jesus.

Plough Monday: Plough Monday is the traditional start of the English agricultural year. It is usually celebrated on the Monday after the celebration of the Epiphany, and signals a return to regular? work after the Christmas season.

Candlemas: Is a cross quarter day that falls midway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox, and in many traditions is considered the beginning of spring. Throughout history, this has been the traditional time to begin to turn the soil over for the coming planting season. It is a time when the promises of renewal from the winter solstice begin to take shape, and we begin the process of coming out of the hibernation of a long winter. In the Christian tradition, this is also the celebration of Mary’s presentation of Jesus at the temple.

Brigit (or Imbolc): A festival that marks the suns growing strength, and the first signs of Spring. Brigid is also one of the four Celtic cross quarter days.

St. Valentines Day: An annual celebration of love and affection, Valentines Day was originally named for a Christian Martyr, Valentine, and was established by Pope Gelasius I in 500 AD. It was deleted by the Roman Calendar of Saints in 1969, but is still celebrated and honored to this day.

Nikta- Your condo is beautiful and we enjoyed our stay so much! All that was here when we arrived- the fresh fruit, the candy, all the staples- made us feel like we were “home.” Your decor immediately made us feel like we truly were in Hawaii! It was a cozy and inviting place to return to every day after all the fun things we found to do!

We are on to the Big Island next to continue our vacation, but Maui will be on our list of places we will return to, Thanks to your gracious hospitality!

Nikta and Brandon,

Our first trip to Maui was a wonderful experience. We enjoyed so many of the activities from “driving the road to Hana,” snorkeling, the luau, Warren and Annabel, and the list goes on. It was so nice (at the end of our long days) to be able to come back to the condo, enjoy the lanai, and relax.

Thank-you for the welcome basket, all of your advice and suggestions as well as the arrangements you made for us in advance of our arrival. We had 8.5 days of “sun” and loved every minute of our stay on Maui.

What an amazing place you have! We have felt so comfortable & at home here! Thank-you so much for the beach towels, rafts, awesome beach bag, ketchup in the fridge & so much more! We love it here, so calm and beautiful! We have enjoyed so many things this week; snorkeling at Molokini, shopping in Lahaina, visiting Napili beach, hiking to the blowhole, zip lining, Luau, and so much more!

After a long journey from Northern Germany, we arrived at Hawaii. The condo is great, nicely furnished and well equipped. The booking via the internet was easy and hassle free. Very nice contact to the owner who offered to give us some advice for our stay.

There have been harvest celebrations since ancient times all around the world. In the middle ages in England and Europe, the harvest festival was called “Harvest Home,” and the villagers would go into the fields and decorate the last load of grain with ribbons and flowers while dancing and singing songs of Praise and Thanks.

The harvest festivals of Europe carried over to America when the first settlers celebrated a bountiful harvest a year after their arrival in November 1621. The natives greatly assisted with the cultivation of crops and they were invited to celebrate with the pilgrims a feast of harvested crops, foul, and seafood. This celebration had an added dimension of not only thanks for the bountiful harvest but also of thanks for the new found freedom the pilgrims were now experiencing in the new land.

The next year the harvest was scarce, and Thanksgiving was not celebrated. The festival was celebrated with irregularity until the end of the revolutionary war in 1789 when George Washington Proclaimed:

“Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these Sates to the service of the great and glorious Being (God) who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be-That we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks…”

This holiday was recognized on different days by different States until it wasnationalized by Lincoln on October 3, 1863.

Dear Nikta,

Thank you so much for a wonderful stay at your cozy condo! From the first time we spoke, your warmth and hospitality set the tone for a fun and relaxing time here in Maui.

We were able to do quite a lot in just 2.5 days – drive to Wailea & Makena, Sunrise @ Haleakala, drive up to Lahaina & the north coast, Road to Hana and dinner @ Mama’s Fish House. Of course we also cooked meals here and relaxed on the lanai. We want to come back to Maui so hopefully that will be sooner rather than later.

Mahalo!! P.S. Thank you for such a lovely gift basket.

Dear Nikta & Brandon,

Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful condo with us! It was such a sweet & kind surprise to have you upgrade us from your Maalaea Banyans condo to the Island Sands #605. Truly made our honeymoon that much more amazing! We were totally shocked to see how well stocked this condo was, had everything we needed! including the amazing welcome basket

Thank you so much for the condo and great memories on Maui.

Honua Kai #622

We had a wonderful time at the Honua Kai. The condo is just beautiful and the grounds and pool are fabulous! Flemming beach was great for body surfing – but only in the summer. Winter waves are too big here. We had a great dinner at Duke’s for our last night – great food and the perfect settings

Thank you Nikta for all your help and for making everything – easy. The condo was well stocked, which we appreciated. ….Until next time……Mahalo

The First Humpback Whale Sighting of the Season in Hawai’i Took Place September 26, 2011!

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the sighting took place on Monday, September 26 off the coast of Hawai’i Island (commonly known as the Big Island). A boat captain witnessed two tail slaps from a humpback whale yearling in Honaunau Bay. The bay is located on the South Kona coast.

Yes, it’s somewhat early, but it’s within the range of what we expect for the first whale sightings of the year.

Last year’s first sighting in Hawai’i took place off the coast of Maui on October 20. The whale was a lone subadult humpback whale.
The first sightings of the year are often subadults – whales that have not yet reached adulthood and sexual maturity. They are later followed by mothers and their calves. Mature males and females arrive later, followed by pregnant females.

Pacific Whale Foundation has records dating back to 1998, which show the first whale sightings off the coast of Maui. 9 of the 13 first reported sightings took place in October; the others were in late September or early November.

You are a fabulous hostess!!

“Wow! Love Maui, Love Island Sands, Love Nikta

This is our second trip back to the Island Sands in Maalaea, and I promise we will come back again. We discovered Nikta Houston a few years ago and she introduced us to Maalaea. We had previuosly stayed ay the posh resorts in Wailea and Kaanapali, but we have now fallen in love with this less crowded, great beach and beautiful harbor town. I don’t know what is better our host Nikta or our accomidations in Island Sands condo #605. Nikta made us feel like VIP’s.

We went to Maui this time to get married and Nikta ensured that our family was well taken care of going above and beyond what any concierge at a resort could/would do. Nikta made us feel like a part of her family. Our condo was beautiful, think understated elegance meets Tommy Bahama. Upon arrival we felt like we were in our own Maui home, it has a wonderful warm feel. Anything that you would want at home Nikta has provided in the condo. We spent every morning on the lanai having coffee over looking the ocean watching the “Freight Train” surf and most evenings with a glass of wine reminiscing about our adventures on the island that day. If you are looking for a very relaxing, stress free, beautiful island vacation this is a great place to stay!

Trip Advisor Review Honua Kai #622

We (parents with a 7 month old and grandparents) spent a week at Honua Kai and thought it was an amazing resort. The resort is top notch. The grounds are well maintained and the pool areas are gorgeous. The beach in front of the resort is beautiful with good snorkeling reef. We saw turtles and all kinds of fish. Our condo (HK #622) was very comfortable and very clean.

“Reserving this unit was effortless. Nikta always responded in a timely manner and went above and beyond our expectations. The complex was well cared for and quiet. The unit itself was large, clean and well appointed. It had everything we needed as well as items to take out and about (beach chairs, coolers, maps, beach towels, etc). This unit is very close to the airport, various excursions and lots of shopping in Lahaina. Nikta offered a great concierge bonus while we were there – offering suggestions and contacts for restaurants, events, excursions, etc.

I cannot conclude without mentioning that we had a lovely welcome basket andcard waiting upon our arrival. Nikta made sure that our stay was nothing less than perfect.”

We stayed in unit 622 at Honua Kai in July 2011 and had a wonderful time. We were greeted with fresh flowers and a fruit basket – what a nicesurprise! The condo was exceptionally clean and looked brand new. The kitchen had everything from paper towels to tea bags to spices.

Same goes for ‘beach preparedness’ – everything from beach chairs to umbrella to towels. What we cherished the most, though, was the personal touch the property manager, Nikta Houston, provided. She gave us great tips on where to go eat and what to do, and even called us after our arrival to see if everything was okay.

We will definitely come back next year!

Thank you so much for the use of your condo. It was perfect for us. It is so well equipped, beautifully appointed, centrally located & very comfortable. We loved our visit to Maui & it is definitely on our list of “places to go back to” We felt in love with Makena Beach. We thoroughly enjoyed the Waterfront restaurant just down the street & ” Mama’s Fish House”. We haven’t made it to Mala yet but plan to go before we flyout on Tuesday.

Aloha! By this time most of you have already heard about the tsunami that hit Maui on March 11, 2011. It was an intense sleepless night for all of us. Many people had to evacuate in the middle of the night. Thankfully, the tsunami that hit Maui was just small and that only minimal damage was incurred. We feel deeply for Japan and are praying for all that are affected by the horrendous disaster.

The photo below is taken by photographer Makena Gadient at 11am Friday March 11, after the 3am tsunami. That is her sister Raven at the Cove, a beach in South Kihei, Maui. She is walking on moist sand, the water receded all the way back.

Maui is now back to normal. It is a beautiful day today as I am typing this post.
